Tending to the Garden that is Your Life!
Like any good garden, your life requires nourishment and attention to keep the "weeds" from taking over!
Sounds like a great start for today’s musings, especially if you enjoy gardening. But here we are going to dive a little deeper into the nourishment of our souls, beyond just the physical upkeep, which is a bit different than what a garden needs.
Sure, we need proper light, watering, nutrition - very similar to what a healthy garden requires. That focus is mostly physical, and our own lives, in my opinion, require care and attention that goes well beyond the vessel that is our physical form!
I’m not saying that the physical aspect isn’t important, it very much is! In fact, even depression can sometimes be alleviated through diet and exercise (check out State Change by Robin Berzin, MD for more information on this topic). But as humans, given our ability to feel such a wide range of emotions (love, happiness, fear, anxiety) and the mere awe and wonder of life itself, surely, we know that there’s a little more to our human needs than the physical form we embody!
In fact, given the range of emotions we have, and the mysteries that are all around us, I think it’s safe to say that we must work with both the seen, our physical components, and the unseen, our thoughts, desires, passions, purpose, etc.!
For this musing we can easily wander off into an infinite range of topics, each with a plethora of information to be consumed. But I wanted to keep it simple by offering one of the many books that I know deals with the unseen aspects of nourishing our lives.

NOTE: I highly recommend the audiobook version because the authors narrate the book together and it includes wonderful sounds from Benjamin Zander’s music adventures!
There’s nothing simple about summarizing the work that must be done to nourish our lives through the interactions with the very real but unseen parts of life. However, I can easily say that if you read this book with the idea of discovering how to nourish this important part of us, I think it will make sense to you.
There’s one VERY important caveat in this conversation. Since our Life is our Garden, it requires, by the very laws of nature, our love and attention. We can ignore it, but a lack of attention means that weeds will grow, which typically choke out the ability to harvest the desired components of the garden as they would bear fruit through your love and attention!
So, if you are at all curious or inspired, time to set sail and try this on! See what you can discover about the unseen parts of your life’s garden just waiting to be explored!
Personal Reflection
A Personal Perspective as it relates to the content of this post - please feel free to share your personal reflections in the comments below!
The blessing of being alive stems from the innate mechanics of life itself, which is our source, which is that which we are. This statement is founded in an acceptance that Life permeates every aspect of all things seen and unseen. It is expansive, evolving, and creative, and we are blessed to be made in its image and likeness, or at the very least, to be a part of this awe-inspiring creativity to which we are innately connected. This is my personal inspiration, a feeling that comes from the heart and gives me such gratitude and joys - to breathe, to love, to learn, to grow, and to create in harmony with Life’s glorious splendor and wisdom.
Try This On
Activities for engaging the ideas in this post!
I highly recommend engaging The Practices that are in this book! As a preview so you can see the potential if you don’t own the book, here are the titles of the twelve practices:
It’s All Invented
Stepping into a Universe of Possibility
Giving an A
Being a Contribution
Leading from Any Chair
Rule Number 6
The Way Things Are
Giving Way to Passion
Lighting a Spark
Being the Board
Creating Frameworks for Possibility
Telling the WE Story
The first one, It’s All Invented, comes from acknowledging that we hold a sort of authorship over our lives by the stories we choose to believe via our personal perception of how the world is. Is it a fantastic place, a place for struggling, a place to create success, a lonely place — it’s all invented. For some this may be difficult to accept as often our beliefs are engrained in our subconscious in a way that removes it from personal inspection. But this removal also takes away our ability to choose our life’s story, limiting our ability for self-expression and the natural capacity to create a life we love.
I highly recommend the book. If you choose to read and engage the book’s practices, you will no doubt be participating in the practice of redecorating your soul!
Enjoy!
